Mixed Age Classrooms —
Ages 1 to 2 , Ages 2 to 3 , Ages 3 to 6 , Grades 1 to 3 , Grades 4 to 6 , Grades 7 to 8
A fundamental component of the Montessori philosophy is the multi-age classroom. In a mixed group, children of various ages and backgrounds share their talents and interests. Older children serve as role models; younger children are embraced by an established classroom community.
Why Mixed Age Groups?
At the heart of Montessori education is Maria Montessori’s belief that children learn best in a collaborative community. Mixed-age classrooms are intentionally designed to reflect the natural dynamics of family and society, where younger children learn through observation and older children develop confidence and leadership through mentorship. In this carefully prepared environment, each child progresses at their own pace, fostering independence, respect, empathy, and a lifelong love of learning.
